The celebration of the O.K. Corral Shootout is over. This morning as I took Jake for a walk I looked up Allen Street and it had the look of “yesterday’s parade”. It was empty of people. I could see the orange cones strewn about the street, and the trash had yet to be picked up…The picture is of Allen Street, where all the action took place, at 6:30 Sunday morning.

Allen Street

During my remarks before the audience at last night’s main banquet I thanked Michael Hickey, out host, for inviting us to the 125th anniversary of the shootout at C. S. Fly’s Studio. It brought down the house. For anyone who doesn’t know, the shootout was at Fly’s Studio, not the O.K. Corral.

We’re headed home, and back to the real world.

From Tombstone, Arizona Territory:

Yesterday was the actual 125th anniversary of the O.K. Corral Shootout. We were at the appropriate location at 2:00 PM. The cowboys were there. Sheriff Behan was there. But, the Earps and Doc Holliday weren’t. They were at another location waiting to do a re-enactment of the killing of Morgan Earp.

The cowboys spent what seemed to be an interminable amount of time…probably close to a half hour…griping about what the Earps had done to them and saying what they were going to do to the Earps. I was reminded of a line Wyatt Earp said in the movie Tombstone, “You talk too much to be a gunfighter.”

Shootout - O.K. Corral

When the Earps did arrive, business was handled in an efficient way. In less than a minute words were said, and guns blazed. The outcome was as it always is…Three cowboys dead.

During the day we came across people from the northeast, Canada and England. You can easily pick out those people. They’re the ones wearing shorts and other assorted civilian clothes. Anyone from the West is dressed in 1800’s attire.

Today Curly Bill Brocius will shoot Marshal Fred White; Virgil Earp will be shot; and Morgan Earp will be killed. I hope the cowboys show up on time. I hate to see someone just standing around asking to be shot.

Last night we attended a get together hosted by Michael Hickey of Talei Publishers in Honolulu, Hawaii. It was great renewing acquaintances with friends, some of whom we haven’t seen in over a year.

The O.K. Corral Shootout took place in an alley just off of Allen Street. We’re camped at Wells Fargo RV Park. Allen Street is about five yards outside our door. The location of the shootout is only about three blocks away. Don’t think we will have to use our truck the whole weekend.

We received two VIP passes that will get us into all the events…They said Jake didn’t need one. I guess he’s so famous that he gets in on his looks alone.

We’re operating on wireless. Unfortunately, the signal is very weak. Will hope to get you some pictures the next time.

Looking forward to a full day.

Today we’re kicking off our Chronicle of the Old West Stampede Tour. For those of you who are new to Chronicle of the Old West, our Stampede Tour is a two year journey throughout America’s West. Because of the Internet, we’re able to publish the newspaper and radio shows from almost anywhere. We’ll be keeping you updated with our travels and experiences.

We’ve just arrived at Tombstone, Arizona to help the locals and people from around the world celebrate the 125th anniversary of the O. K. Corral Shootout.

We’ll keep you updated with the activities, including the number of times the shootout is re-enacted.

We haven’t talked very much about our two-year tour of the West, primarily because, as with any venture of this magnitude, we have encountered a delay or two.  And, we wanted to be fairly certain of our journey’s begin before we started passing on information.

Although, as we know, the future is in God’s hands, here is our schedule as of today.  Our tour of the West…We’ve named it “Chronicle of the Old West Stampede Tour”…will begin on October 24 as we head to Tombstone, Arizona to help the locals and thousands of others celebrate the 125th anniversary of the O.K. Corral Shootout.

Then we’ll be coming back up to Show Low, Arizona to get a bigger Conestoga Wagon and some new horses.  We’ll actually be picking up our 34’ Montana fifth wheel and new Dodge pick-up.

We’re regularly asked where we’re going during the two years.  My answer is we’re going to be 1800’s “Boomers.”  Boomers went where the action was.  We have several events scheduled, and a number of towns marked on the map.  But, these won’t fill out the whole two years.  If you know of a place of event where we should be, tell us about it.

We’ll be keeping everyone updated with regular entries on this page.

Sidekick #010 is Ed LeRoy. Ed is Old Cowtown Museum’s Manager of Special Projects.  A 5th generation Kansan (“Born on the Santa Trail and turned twenty-one on the Chisholm Trail”) the history of the Old West and particularly the part Kansas played has always been close to Ed’s heart.
